Being clear on what you want and how you want it developing your skills daily as an artist (what goes on in your mind) will elevate your paintings into great pieces of art. Listening today to a superb artist Dennis Perrin point out the importance of developing a deeper understanding of what it is that you would like to say in your paintings. Losing the idea of a painting being “loose” should be replaced with the idea of “intention” is so important. Many of the old masters developed a very incisive underpainting/structure that they would lay the most important and deliberate brush strokes upon. Practice conditioning your mind with several things beforehand, your aim, skill, inspiration, even meditation perhaps and most importantly seeing the end result before your brush touches the canvas, visualizing what is it you desire to paint in your mind and what you’d like to step into as an artist expressing yourself to the world. The goal is making something that is difficult to paint look easy and effortlessly beautiful.
